We’ve seen how the Chieftain tank was powered by a multi fuel, opposed piston two stroke diesel.
But that’s not all. It also had an auxiliary engine used to power ancillaries and start the main one and splendidly it was
another
opoc engine, this time a Coventry Climax H30 900 cc triple (with six pistons of course)

Coventry Climax made forklifts and pumps and came up with a lightweight, powerful engine which would pump very well indeed and had the unusual feature that it would run at or near full throttle without being fully warmed up . Even better it would power a car briskly and so Climax engines became quite a thing. Eventually they made a V8 which was used by Cooper in the 2.5 litre Formula 1 and had 22 wins. They also designed the 875cc all alloy engine used in the Hillman Imp.
Things went down from there with the company being passed from one to another in the formation and breakup of British Leyland and eventually going into receivership. The engine business was bought and later closed by Horstman who made the tracks on the Chieftain and are still in the track business.
